(This preview originally appeared in the September issue of IGN Unplugged. If the execution lives up to the promise of the game, then gamers just might have another reason to skip class and call in sick to work. Right now things are looking good for the game's imminent release. While we had a blast playing on those maps, we also enjoyed trying out the city, volcano and snow maps that have been in the beta for a while already. Hourglass has two bases really close together with a big ass hill covered in tiberium right in the middle. Not coincidentally, it's also the smallest. I think my favorite of all the maps is Hourglass. The Canyons map features the same desert theme that's in the current Walls map, but it has elevated concrete driving structures. We played through the four beta maps that are in current circulation as well as a few more maps that no one had seen yet (we've got plenty of pics of these in our media section below). But for true Nod fiendishness, you just can't beat the Stealth Tank. The Nod have buggies and APCs as well, while their heavy firepower is provided by Mobile Artillery and Flame Tanks. On the GDI side, Humm-Vees and APCs make engineer rushes even more tempting while Mammoth Tanks and Mobile Rocket Launchers give you enough firepower to take out most base structures. These are taken straight from the original C&C and should be pretty familiar to any gamer who wants to be taken seriously. If you'd rather not slog it out on foot, you can hop into one of the game's many vehicles. Chain guns, chemical throwers, tiberium auto rifles and a host of other weapons let you pick the way you want to play. GDI's Deadeye comes equipped with a sniper rifle, while Nods' Black Hand troops come with laser rifles. If you'd like to get a little more ambitious, you can purchase any of the ten specialist characters on each side. It's this other weapon that really defines your role. While it's a much more passive role, the engineer's ability to repair buildings and units as well as carry numerous C4 charges make them a really viable class to play.Įach class has a pistol, a C4 charge and some other weapon. The basic soldiers, shotgunners, grenadiers and flame troops are the basic units of Renegade.

The various character classes allow you to select the type of role you'd like to play. Dan's starting a new class this February. If I have to tell you what you get for destroying the base defenses, you need a refresher course in RTSology. The refineries can be targeted to reduce the amount of money the opposing team gets. Destroying either of these means your enemies can only field the most basic troops against you. The barracks let you purchase high level soldiers and the vehicle factory lets you purchase, you guessed it, vehicles. All of your purchases take twice as much money as usual. Shut them down and your base defenses shut down. The power plants provide energy for the rest of your base. In all, the economy seemed really well balanced, but since I was just saving up all the money I could and running nuclear strike beacons into the GDI base, I might not be the best person to judge.Īlmost all of the buildings you remember from the original C&C are included here. You also get quite a bit of money for healing your own units and structures. But you'll also gain money from killing enemies and destroying buildings. In keeping with the C&C theme, this makes enemy harvesters a prime target. The more your team harvests, the more money you'll have.

All players gain Tiberium credits as a consequence of harvesting. The economy of the game is based on Tiberium. You can win by either having the most points at the end of the time limit, by destroying the enemy base, or by placing an ion cannon or nuclear strike beacon within the specified area in the enemy barracks. Players purchase vehicles and various character kits in an attempt to destroy the opposition. Two teams, the virtuous GDI and the vile Nod, start in their own bases at opposite ends of the map.
Command and conquer renegade tiberian series#
The gang at Westwood have taken the ideas of their premiere real-time strategy series and translated them into a first-person shooter context. What most separates Westwood's title from all the other first-person action games out there is the inclusion of a really inventive multiplayer mode. Last week I had a chance to sit down and play through a few hours of multiplay for Command & Conquer Renegade, Westwood's upcoming first-person shooter.
